USB charging

OP, my cord is plugged into the fairing USB port (Road Glide) so I don’t know why your cables stop working. Does your battery direct setup have an inline fuse?

The Mophie that I mentioned isn't an extra device to charge. It's a phone case. When you get home or to your hotel or whatever, you plug it in and both the phone and the case get charged at the same time. You can go two and a half times as long without needing a charge.
Getting back usb chargers, they come in two available outputs. The most common one puts out a little over one volt. Some put out a little over two volts. The two volt ones will charge faster. Usually this information is written very small on the package and even smaller on the device.
The failures you are experiencing I suspect are caused from using cheap cables, cheap chargers, chargers meant for indoor use instead of ones made for a motorcycle, or some combination thereof.
Have a look at these

On cables for Apple devices, I think it’s luck of the draw. I’ve had some cheap cables that have worked for years and some that didn’t work well right out of the box. I’ve had some expensive cables that sucked. I don’t see any real patterns...but I’ve never had a cable related issue on any of my bikes and I’ve done the cigarette lighter on the Street Glide, the USB port on the Road Glide and the pigtail adapter on the Street Bob. They all worked equally well.

id maybe revise that statement to say ‘cheap **** don’t work reliably’. I’ve used cheap cables that have worked flawlessly for years.
