Yes, that's what I do. I then tighten up the lift back up but the hydraulic cannister is then not bearing any weight until it is time to take the bike back down.

Just an update. Recieved my jack today from J&S . Took exactly 5 weeks. I'm happy with the quality of it.

Any here have any experience with Dunwell lifts.
ano longer in business, but were uilt exclusively for HD
Built in 1400 and 2000 lift capacity

EDIT: For the thread, the Strongway 5-ton air/hydraulic jack is no longer available on the Northern web site. Strangely, they have a bunch listed on eBay.
