Two Birds with One Stone
I have been having a hard time riding longer distances due to my age. I have been messing around with a windshield and fangs to alleviate neck pain due to arthritis. No matter what I did with them I still had buffeting. Every change just brought the wind in from another location. With everything installed the wind came up from alongside the tank. I gave up and took it all off. I prefer to ride a naked bike anyway, I'll just take Tylenol with me. The other issue is sore butt. I just recently bought a used Mustang seat from a member here. I took my first longer ride today. My butt did a whole lot better with the new seat as compared to the crappy OEM seat that comes on the Slim. But the major benefit was from the back rest that came with it. No longer hanging on to the bars with a death grip at high speeds. Sat back and enjoyed the ride and I think it took the pressure off my neck Win Win.

I just added a backrest to the stock HD seat on my Electra Glide Classic and it was a huge improvement. As far as wind management goes... I get some buffeting with my fairing even. It is hard to get away from it. When I road without anything at all on previous bikes, I found the pressure on my chest was the big thing, and like you say, the backrest should help with that too. For me though, the real advantage of the fairing and windscreen is protection from the elements, rain mainly, but also road debris, bugs, etc.
