put it this way. The exterior dimensions and weight between the two are just about identical. Around here, you could get a decent 883 for 3 to 5k so if your budget is 6, the bigger one should easily be doable. It's much cheaper to do it now than to try to add displacement later. with an upgrade kit.

You can't go wrong as long as you are comfortable with it, no matter what you buy. I was looking at a 1200 Sportster, but knew I would be doing a lot of 2-up with the wife and the Sporty seemed cramped. Somebody mentioned simplistic or something along those lines. The Street Bob (FXDB) is pretty simplistic, weighs in around 675ish and handles well. You could probably find a good used one around 6K or so. Good luck to you in whichever path you take.

I would say give the either the 1200 or dyna series a try. Check both out and see what feels right once you throw a leg over it. My first bike was 2006 dyna, it was my first bike ever. Im 6'2 225lbs, the sportster was a little small for me. I've ridden one before and it was a cool bike and i enjoyed riding it. I've since gotten rid of the dyna, and picked up a fatboy S, which is a completely different dynamic than the dyna, imo. I am still getting used to the fatboy, and i am not 100% there yet, and i have owned the bike since june of this year. I would really like to give the sportster 72 a try, it is an awesome looking rig in my opinion and must be a blast to ride.
