Stock HID Headlight bulb

Ok, Im placing this here, as it will get much more traffic, and hopefully an answer to my issue. I have a stock Harley Davidson HID (dual bulb) headlight on my 2000 Ultra Classic. The HID bulb, in this case the low beam appears to be going out. it is cutting out, and is very purple in color. The high beam is a standard halogen and is working just fine. I do not, and can not determine whether the ballast is taking a dump or if the bulb is going out. I am hoping that the bulb is going out, and that it is not a proprietary bulb. Any part number I can find is NLA through HD sources.

TL DR:HID low beam going out, does anyone know the bulb type?

If the bulb is truly DAMN EXPENSIVE AND made of unobtanium, I will just go with a Sunpie LED unit. Does anyone know what other parts are needed for this conversion. I can handle the wiring, but dont need parts surprises with mounting.

That's an old racing term from the 1970's that means it may be a "factory" part and not available to regular riders, only FACTORY sponsored riders. Kind of a cute play on words.

I didn't realize Harley put HID bulbs in their bikes, thought they used halogen for that year.

From what I have been able to gather, it was an added catalog option (and not a cheap one) but has since become discontinued. Ive pretty much decided to shitcan it and replace with a Sunpie Daymaker. Bring it into this century finally.....

That said, I pulled the bulb out, and its a D1R style, and is most likely shot. The start function arcs, but the bulb will not hold the arc to produce light. Could be a ballast, but when both the bulb and the ballast are over a hundo each, and a daymaker is 60 bucks, gee not much thought needs to go into this.

It's cheap to upgrade but the Sunpie looks hideous to me. Here's an alternative for $100 plus 10% off promo I just put one on my bike but haven't been able to get it out for a ride yet.

Gotcha. The way I read the original post I thought you were under the impression that it was a stock headlight with HID. Didn't realize it was "upgraded".. I think now you realize that LED is the way to go if, for nothing else, the cost involved. Carry on.....

I just installed this and really happy with it. Funny enough I just posted it in “light forum” nice new design with “wings” that provide proper light separation (finally) 30$ for 2 bulbs

Not that I know what I am talking about for your situation, but just got Paradise LED bulbs for my Heritage, very pleased with them. You might call them to see if they can help with your setup (glancing at their site, it seems like maybe they can). https://paradiselightsllc.com/

At the time I thought it was. The housing is externally similar to the dual halogen one that IS stock. Only through a good amount of Googlefu was I able to track down what I had. I did like the output of the HID light, but now that its crapped out, ill just do with the LED. probably better off in the end.

Rizzo, thats an interesting light, but I had already purchased the Daymaker knockoff. if/when it takes a crap, I may look into it again.
