Helmet again........and don't get on MY case.

I am PRO CHOICE pretty much EVERYTHING! Helmets, pregnancy, firearms, etc... I DETEST the gov or ANYONE telling me what I can and can not do.

Having said that, I just came back from my annual ophthalmologist appt. He does emergency coverage for 2 of the major (large) hospital emergency rooms in Palm Beach & Broward counties.

He asked me if I wear a helmet when I ride. I said "always.". He said good. Then followed up with an "off the cuff" remark (NOT in a condescending way at all) he said matter of factly, that when Florida passed the law riding with a helmet is optional for whatever age it is and above, his calls to the ER for bike related accidents (be it damage he had to fix or as a consult) went up 300%.

This thread is not meant to be another long drawn out discussion about helmets for the bazillionth time. It is just an interesting "fact" to note. His staff figured the numbers on his call outs over the years. A 300% increase for bike related issues.

Huh..........

So what's your point? Is there one?

Yes BUT I am not preaching what others should do.

The point is, wearing a helmet does make a diff. <-- More factual than not.

Now, here comes all of the :icon_blah:

I'm 'juss sharing the facts. Good. Bad. Or indifferent.

CONTINUE GOING WITHOUT a helmet. Fine. Doesn't effect me any. (Mostly that is it does not effect me.)

'juss sharing the facts.

Just like of people still want to believe the world is flat............ FINE WITH ME.

Were these all eye injuries?

TattoodCaptain 02-01-2019 05:22 PM

Whoa hold on...... It's not flat?

DaveE 02-01-2019 05:26 PM

Do you have a link to “facts”?

I do not know. I almost asked him. I suspect when there is a severe jolt to the head, anything within the orbital socket can get severely jolted. You know things like retina detachment etc....

I know little of this matter but I can "see" how someone would be happy to sue if it was not checked very closely. And of course ER guys are not likely to be eyeball specialists. Heck, just today I learned what an iridotomy is. Eyeball related. "Who knew?"

Not sure what you mean. When a biker (and others) were in an accident and when the eye or related structure could be effected, the ophthalmologist would be called in for a consult or to do surgery or whatever to the eye and it's region.

That is what I was saying.
