Default Lane-Splitting in Texas

Legislation has been filed in the Texas house and senate to make lane-splitting legal. If passed and signed into law, it would go into effect September 1, 2019.

I have been driving a semi for almost 35 years with close to 5 million accident free miles, and I can say without hesitation.......lane splitting is a BAD idea, period!

That's great news, the legislator who introduced the bill must be a rider. Hope the governor signs it.

Good Luck, lobby your legislators hard.

We had a bill here in VA this session that would have allowed motorcyclists on divided highways where the traffic was stopped or moving less than 15 mph to use the shoulder, at a speed less than 25mph to get to the next exit. It was filed so us air cooled motorcycle riders could prevent our bikes from over heating. The bill didn't make it out of committee

Lane splitting here sucks because it is covered under reckless driving statute. So it's not just a traffic ticket, it's a misdemeanor.

I drive 45 miles each way to work on two major highways every day and will say that lane splitting would save me at least a half hour of commuting time each way if it was legal. The only problem here is that our lanes are not wide enough for a bike to fit between the lanes. It would also be more dangerous for the riders since we are not accustomed to look out for bikes in between cars. It is bad enough now with distracted drivers that lane splitting would endanger riders even more.

Lane widths are federally mandated. Your lanes are no different than anywhere else...

Why? I have been splitting for 21 years without issue. I couldn't disagree more. It way more dangerous to sit in traffic and risk getting rear ended by some a...hole that is texting because actually talking on the phone is so difficult. The things you see cagersdoing when you split would convince you otherwise.

I see things cagers do from a far better view in my semi than you do on your scoot, and that EXACTLY why I say no way. Keep in mind, i ride too. But, to each their own, i would outlaw it in a New York minute.
