Lane Splitting in Utah

Lane Splitting in Utah
A lane splitting(filtering) bill has finally passed the Utah House, and has been advanced to the Utah Senate. I haven't read through the entire bill and all it's amendments, but it is summarized (with a couple of factual errors) in a local newspaper article. Basically it would be filtering on roads with a speed limit of 50mph or less, not including freeways unfortunately. It would include filtering at traffic signals though, which for me, would be a big deal.
The Utah Legislature tried a similar bill last year, but it was defeated. It looks like this current bill has enough support to pass.

I found the actual House Bill summary from the Legislature website:
383 (5) An individual may engage in lane filtering only when the following conditions
384 exist:
385 (a) the individual is operating a motorcycle;
386 (b) the individual is on a roadway divided into two or more adjacent traffic lanes in the
387 same direction of travel;
388 (c) the individual is on a roadway with a speed limit of 50 miles per hour or less;
389 (d) the vehicle being overtaken in the same lane is stopped;
390 (e) the motorcycle is traveling at a speed of 15 miles per hour or less; and
391 (f) the movement may be made safely.

If this all passes, I think the Legislature will most likely make it all provisional, which is good. It will give a definite timeline to re-visit it all, and add on if possible.

I just moved to Ogden. This is a good thing. I don’t split lanes myself, but I see the benefits. When I rode to California for the first time, I was sitting in traffic on my bike when someone hauling *** split the lane and scared the **** out of me! Wasn’t expecting it and by the time he was passing I about left a hershey kiss on my seat!
