Like others, I just leave mine plugged in all the time. As far as damaging the receptacle, even the least expensive ones will last many, many years without being damaged or worn out.

I have about 6 battery tenders, all plugged in all the time. Even if the bikes or other batteries are not hooked up at the time.

Plus an older bike doesn't have the parasitic drain on a battery like a more modern one does.
The hotter the weather, the faster a battery self-discharges. Many people think the opposite is true. Yes, cold weather will degrade a battery's performance in terms of cranking power, but a properly maintained battery will last longer in a cooler climate than in a hot one.

As to your unplugging dilemma, I have my two tenders plugged into a switched power bar.

For those compelled to break ***** - why? Sure, I get a little good-natured ribbing, but the guy's offering a suggestion. Don't like the suggestion? Move on. Like it? Take the advice. Frankly, I think I'm going the power-strip route.
