I'm torn....upgrade my 03' Heritage to a newer Road King?
#11
keep the heritage and get a road king. you only live once. that's what I did when a stealer told me they'd give me 6K for my 2002 roadking toward a streetglide. My roadking is worth it's weight in gold to me. I have never regretted making that decision. I now have 2 very different bikes to ride depending on how I'm feeling on any given day. of course that is if you can swing owning both.

Similar tale to tell - I had an 04 Heritage that I upgraded to a 15 RK (that was totaled) then I went back to a 2017 Heritage. My 04 was seasoned to taste but was stock height. I never had an issue riding 2 up, the bike never missed a beat. I also had true duals and fish tails but my seat was a Mustang. The only thing I wished the bike had was a 6 speed. I liked the RK but I loved the Heritage.
The 17 Heritage was short lived (I got an offer I couldn't refuse) and now have an 18 FB114 - and I still want a Heritage...
There's a decision to make but theres no wrong answer...

A motorcyclist coming here and asking if they should buy a new/bigger bike is like an alcoholic going to the bar and asking if he should get a drink.
Your Heritage is a beautiful bike, you have made it yours, but you aren't going to get anywhere near what it is worth to you, or what you have put in it if you trade it in on a roadking. Then you are going to spend more money making the roadking the way you want it. Upgrading the suspension and maybe the seat for the OL will be the cheapest option.

I was in a very similar situation as you. I had a 2003 FatBoy and customized it to fit me perfectly. I started doing a lot of 2-up riding when the little lady started taking a liking to riding so I wanted to upgrade to a King. I found a smoking deal on a 2009 and bought it. Best decision ever. The kicker is, with there being so many used bikes on the market I wasn't getting a decent enough deal to justify selling the FatBoy....plus I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that bike!! I decided to keep it and still have it. I don't ride it as much as the King but I love riding around town on that Fatty. The King does most everything better than the fatboy although the seating position on an old softail is second t none....they balance themselves.
I say buy a King and hold onto that Heritage. She's a beauty and you did a ton of work to it that you'll NEVER get anywhere near what you paid for back should you sell it.

If you can afford to keep the Heritage, keep it and buy a Road King. Ride the Heritage when you ride alone and use the RK on trips and when your wife rides with you. I have way too much money in my 06 Heritage to ever sell it. The other advantage to having 2 bikes is if one is in the shop, you can still ride.

silidon, I had 2 heritages(01 and 10) and loved them both. Last year I traded to 2017 roadking. Loved the heritages But wanted the little extras of a touring bike. Don't ride 2 up much but went with mustang seat. If your not after new I would look at 2016 and before. No problems with mine yet but read of lots of issues on m8 and transmission to primary oil migration. Bought the esp to be covered but lucky so far. To end I would test ride one and I think you would like It. Im 5- 11 and don't really have any issues with height. Mustangseat advertised it lowered rider but don't think it did. Very comfortable seat though.
