Default Shift Lever Preference

I apologize in advance for the basic question(s) here but I am new to the cruiser world and I'm trying to remember what the name of the HD shift lever style is (with forward being the downshift and backward being the upshift). I've ridden dirt bikes for a lot of years so I'm still getting used to this style of shifting, but I've heard some people opt for taking the back shift lever off, so as to give it more of the standard shift feel. I'm wondering if I should go this route, since that's what I'm used to, or if I should just get used to shifting with my heal. Can y'all provide some thoughts/insight for me? Any sort of guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Joey

P.S - Sorry if this is in the wrong portion of the forums, I'm clearly new here as well.

It's the heel shifter. Lot of people take them off. I like mine, I have bikes with and without. No problem going from one to the other.

Yeah, I guess I'm just not experienced enough with them yet. Maybe I'll leave it on so I can try to figure the dang thing out. I have no problem shifting without it but with it I over rev because I have to actually think about what I'm doing and I feel like a dumbass lol. Thanks for the info!

If you grew up on dirt bikes, just ditch the heel shift.

Try it both ways. I like the heel shifter. And like you, I still ride dirt bikes.

I added one to my Dyna. I like the Heel Toe Shifter.

Removed mine since it takes up floor board space. On long trips I occasionally like to hang my heels off the end for a different riding position. Almost like having mid controls.

HD makes a cover for the exposed rod when removed.

I like the heel shifter on bikes that have floorboards.
With foot pegs I prefer the toe shifter.

When I bought my Softail, I figured I'd take the heel shifter off. First I decided to give it a try for a couple of days. By the time I got home from the dealer, I decided I liked it. 25 years later, I still do.
