Question 88" Twin Cam Motor - Resell Value?

A couple years back I got a great deal on a custom H-D with the seller even throwing in a boxed 88" Twin Cam motor. I was looking forward to building another bike around the motor but time and money has that motor still living in a box in a storage unit rather than in a frame where it belongs. Researching the engine number the motor began life powering a 2002 FLHT. LIke I said, it's been sitting in a box so I haven't any idea what internal issues it might have, but I do know that it needs some TLC externally. All of which leads me to the forum looking for general assistance in answering two questions:

1) Any thoughts on what a fair selling price would look like? (What you see is what it is)

2) Any thoughts on an effective ways to restore its lacking lustre?

Thanks for any counsel.

That's a tough question, especially when you can get a whole bike with a chromed out engine and low miles for 2002 (16k -25k) at or around $4000 - $6000 on the high side, now there will be those few out there asking 8-12K but their sitting in their own flatulence.

I would think if it turns over you might start at $1500 then take best offers from there. Good luck

I've seen excellent looking twin cams on ebay for $1000-$1500. Looking at the end of the crankshaft, and rust /corrosion overall on yours,I wouldn't think it's worth much of anything.

Was it stored in salt water?

Honestly, no offense meant, but that's in pretty rough condition, coupled with the fact that it's the old aluminum covers on a silver engine... I'd think $500 might be fair IF it runs...

Something like that, I'd say. If even that high.

From a buyer's perspective, your buying a cosmetically very rough looking engine from a guy who got it in a box from another guy and who therefore doesn't have any idea why it was taken out of service or even if it runs.

Total pig in a poke situation. Could be a great motor. Could be a boat anchor.

As mentioned above, salvage guys on ebay are asking $1k to $1.5k for clean looking TC motors, and those frequently include video of it running before they took it out.

Make a lamp out of it and put it on your garage shelf.

Well if it was a 'throw-in' then anything you get out of it is a bonus right? $350-$450?? If it's just taking up space...
