who avoids the interstates?
Little back ground for me. I'm not new to Motorcycles by any means but most of my experience was years ago on dirt bikes. I have had a Harley about 5-7 years ago that I rode some but the wife then (X-Wife now) didn't care to ride with me so I sold it.
So now I have had my 07 Heritage since November and haven't been able to ride a ton but going every chance when I can.
with that said there is something about running the interstate that kind of bothers me a little. I'm sure its more of a confidence thing but man the way people drive on the interstate freaks me out when I drive my truck let alone the bike.
what is your all opinions on riding on the interstates. is it more of confidence thing than anything in your opinion?

I only avoid them in the sense that out on the open road, they are boring. Only time I'm on them out there is when I'm looking to cover big miles in a short time.
As far as safety and risk go, they are the best place to be. All the traffic flowing in the same direction, no intersections, etc. Not a lot of left turns in front of you on the Interstate.
In town, I generally get myself into the left-most lane (so I only have to worry about lane encroachment from one side), keep my pace faster than traffic, and keep an eye out on the mirrors for someone coming up hard behind me.

If I can avoid the interstate, I will. It's not that I am afraid, or nervous when I do ride on the interstates, it is, much like you said, the other people that just do not pay attention, and there are so many more people out on the interstates around here than on the back roads I usually take.

Exactly! I do the same.

I don't mind the interstate's,I know I won't get T-Boned there, but like said above they're boring and not very scenic,at least most of them.Best thing is paying attention when going over overpasses, you never know whats on the other side.Traffic jams suck when you don't know they're there.

I tend to keep to them more often than not. Jump on, get in the middle or left lane keep speed up to keep away from the idiots or slow down to where you're away from them. And it's wishful thinking on my part I know, but I trust the Semi driver who does it for a living more than I trust soccer mom in a minivan with a screaming pack of crotch goblins yelling at her from the back seat.
Local highways are nice, scenic, and fun in their own ways, but I find myself relaxing and enjoying myself more on the interstate for some reason.

I thought about riding in today, about 20 miles on I-87 south into Albany. Then I remembered all the a-holes that stay in the passing lane until they are halfway down (next to) the I-90 exit and shoot over 3 lanes cutting off multiple cars to beat the line and the on ramp mergers that shoot over 2 lanes to get into the passing lane as soon as they get on the highway without even looking over the shoulder and decided to stick with riding on the weekends on back roads. I'd rather they hit my Expedition with how aggressively terrible the drivers are in the north east.
