Califronian Registration Help
 

Question for the California crew regarding registration of an interstate bike.
I recently purchased a 2000 Sporty from NY with 4000 miles on it, I'm currently unable to register it because it doesn't have the CA standard emissions label required of all bikes under 7500 miles. My options are not looking good but figured id ask the question if anybody has advice that may help. Thanks in advance.

its my understanding, that the 7,500 mile requirement only applies for 2 year or newer vehicles. So, you can register following the following procedure.

better yet, go to the DMV to work it out.

Thanks for that @TriGeezer I'm told that a trip to the DMV will immediately raise a red flag and deem the vehicle unable to be registered so was looking to avoid that but appreciate the reply

You live in Cali and are a resident of the State then you can only reigister the out of state bike if it has 7500 on the clock.

And you are correct, if you go to DMV and try to “work it out” they will block any and all future attempts to register the bike.

Your best bet is to ride for another 3500 miles to get the mileage or sell it out of state.

seems weird that they consider any vehicle as a 'new' vehicle if it does not have 7500 miles on the odometer, regardless of age.

could you find a used speedo with more than 7500 miles on it and swap them out? I know that newer bikes have issues with the speedo and ecm, but they may be old enough to not have that problem?

Oh, to fix yer problem. Just ride yer bike! This is Calif. You can pile 3500 miles in a month, easily. Hell, even during Winter! (We do this, just to PO all the poor snowbound bastards!) lol.

If you just recently moved you should be able to register the bike. But if you are resident and buying a bike from another state the 7500 mile rule applies. The CA dmv website will be your best resource

If you and the bike are moving into California, and the bike does not have the California emissions label and has less than 7500 miles, you can file an DMV-supplied affidavit stating you are moving into the state and the DMV will register the bike.

If you are a California resident already, no such luck.

Find a speedo with 7500+ miles on ebay that fits the bike (hole), even if you don't hook it up.
Take bike to AAA for inspection and registration.
Replace original speedo.
Enjoy bike...

Go out and ride it or borrow a speedo. Probably find a broken one for free somewhere.
