I liked the sweet blue Springer more than the finished product

Finished product is a really nice bike, but I think I agree with you about the blue Springer.

I takr it the blue one was 'before'? If so,why all the time and expense to screw up a nice bike?

That's the entire point to building a custom bike for yourself, right there. If all you want is the same Factory stock look that everyone else has, you'd never start the project.
