Default 1983 fxrt

So, im looking at a 1983 fxrt. The guy wants to trade me even up for an old highboy f250 ive had for almost 20yrs and dont drive. The fxrt does not have the fairing or bags so its more like an fxrs with the dual discs. Its got the original seat, its got an ok backyard paint job, its got some aftermarket tank and the original tank which isnt on the bike, and an fl style front fender but also includes the original fender too. The bike fired right up from a cold start, no smoke or anything from the exhaust. Its got a set of drag pipes on it and the mileage is somewhere around 35-40k.

Im wanting something as just kind of a run around bike. Sort of be the opposite of the limited i already have. Its got the shovelhead and i know the original enclosed chain drive.

So, any thoughts on an 83 shovel fxr? I value the truck and everything with it approx 4500. Is the 83 fxr a turd or what? I know the 83 was one of 2 yrs the shovel came in an fxr. Is this something i should run from? Or a cool around town type bike?

I had an 82 FXR that I am sorry I traded. I really liked the rubber-mounted Shovelhead motor. One area I had challenges with was finding aftermarket / original exhaust parts. I also had to replace the transmission output shaft bearing.

Just in case you havent read this review https://ridermagazine.com/2017/02/21...retrospective/

It's one of those deals- the closer it is to stock the more it's worth.

If it still had the faring and bags I’d say grab it but, since it’s been hacked I would wait and find an Evo FXR.

IF....if you had the cash in hand from selling your truck, I would definitely be advising against using it to buy this bike. That said....this is an easy way to get into an interesting project bike and that might be enough to make it worthwhile to you.

It sounds like something you'll have to spend at good chunk of change on to get it looking and running good. Is this going to be a project or are you looking for something to just ride?
If you're looking for a project, it sounds like a good one.
If its a rider you're after I would hold out for something that wont need as much attention as this bike sounds like it needs.

What color are the drag pipes up next to the cylinder? Are they a real pretty blue? If so I'd pass.
