Is there any consensus on which types of motorcycle locks are best? My bike weighs 1000lbs so it's no easy grab and go but still, even with the Harley alarm and pager system...if I'm not nearby those don't provide adequate protection. I got the brake lock for the handlebar but it's not very impressive. It is subtle though, hardly noticeable. But a thief need just go around it and focus on the cable. The disk locks look interesting. What options are best for a big bagger?
Even though I do have an alarm , ignition and fork lock , I have come to terms that if anyone wants my bike , they will take it no matter what , or at least try too . The best you can do is get good insurance and hope for the best .
I've seen all sorts of things , logging chains , cables , disc locks etc , will they work , might help delay them or better , detour them , but if they want it , they're gonna get it .
I use a Xena disc brake lock alarm. It's got a built in alarm if disturbed, sounds really loud when holding it but gets a bit muffled when attached to a rotor. Still, its loud enough for people hear so hopefully it would make a thief choose another target or if someone tried to sit on or mess with the bike the alarm will go off. Also if I forget its on there as soon as I stand the bike up the alarm is going off so I don't forget to remove it. I use mine on the rear wheel, everyone seems to put disc locks on the front but I figure if you lifted the front wheel you could roll the bike around on the back tire. At least on the rear it's more difficult to lift and you can't roll it on the front tire as its locked to the left. You would have to lift the whole bike, which I'm sure a couple guys could do.
As others have said if someone really wants the bike they'll figure out a way, I've got insurance but try to at least make the bike enough of a headache to steal that they move along to something else.
Oh I also have a super heavy duty motorcycle chain lock with square links but it's cumbersome to take with you anywhere really. I used to use it when I lived in the city I would chain the bike through my truck wheel.
Also, you said you had the lock for the brake lever? Wouldn't that be easily defeated with a quick snip of the brake line?
I have insurance, I personally find the security system annoying as ****. I find far more security and solitude carrying my Glock and 2 spare clips thank you.
