1983 xr1000
Would love to have this; however, the price is a little out of my range. I think it is over priced; however, do not know what they are going for. If it was $6,000 - $7,000 I might jump on it.
One owner and looks to be unmolested for the most part. 1983 Harley Davidson XR1000 - $14,000 (Columbia) One-owner, strong running, original bike - upgraded electronic ignition, and Screaming Eagle fork brace. Includes original owner and service manuals, 2 sets of keys, and a variety of parts/supplies for cosmetic restoration. Bike needs nothing and is a blast to ride. Not buying it
That's an OK sporty. I would give maybe four grand for it. Maybe five if it runs amazing and looks great in person. I suspect somebody that is an expert told the guy he owns a super duper collectible worth a fortune. Pretty funny, really.... Nice bike and interesting but not really exotic by my standards. Now a pure stock like new cafe sporty XLCR might go for some bucks. But that is a different model from this one.
If you guys know of similar models going for huge prices let me know. Maybe I am just stupid or something. Anybody? Am I missing something? JD Powers has this listed as about right but around these parts you rarely see an old '80s sporty no matter how cool going for more than five grand. No? |

It's a desirable, collectable model. We had one in the shop, the owner was offered $10k for his and turned it down. Some guys aren't the experts they think they are ...

The XR1000 isn't an easy bike to work on. To service the battery, primary, or generator, the left side mounted exhaust system has to be removed. Valve adjustments are labor intensive. If the top end needs to be removed, the entire engine must be removed from the frame. The carburetors need to be synchronized from time to time. The lower end and transmission is the same as the XLX, except the connecting rods are a half inch shorter to accommodate the XR top end. The taller heads required shorter cylinders to fit in the XLX frame, thus the shorter rods. I remember hearing that the entire project took Harley 60 days from conception to production. Pretty amazing.

H-D had twice flirted with the street based XR concept during the 70's building two prototype motorcycles. The first cycle built by my grandfather in H-D's experimental department was based on a XLCH donor fitted with alloy XR jugs, pistons, heads and carbs. The stock XL crank assy was retained with the longer stroke accommodated by use of stroker plates. It was completed in May 1973 substantiated by two photos I have of my grandfather with the cycle at the Juneau Ave factory. A second prototype cycle was constructed during late 1977 though early 1978 by an ex- H-D racing department employee working out of his fabricating business. This was a collaboration effort with H-D experimental which had built a second XL based XR engine this time of 750cc displacement by putting in the additional effort of machining XL cases to fit the shorter stroke XR crank assy.

Rare motorcycle, in excellent shape, price seems appropriate. It is not a common Sportster by a long shot, would love to have one.
