Richard James Quigley, a biker who became a local folk hero by wearing a baseball cap in defiance of the state's motorcycle helmet law, died over the weekend from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was 63.

RIP. I read a lot about him and how he beat the laws when I had an unresolved non dot helmet ticket. We lost a real fighter unfortunately...:(

Sorry to hear it...Goes to show the helmet cannot save you from dying for a thousand other reasons in life, but stops some from living the way they might like while there here...... This guy had someballs, and lived it anyway and was not just talk! For that he will always be respected.

Thanks for posting this,,,,,i enjoyed reading the story about mr quigleys life etc,,,Sounds like that cat stood for something ! need more folks like him around these days in my opinion....I wear a helmet, but certainly do not think its anyone elses bizz if i do or i don't...RIP richard james quigley.

major bummer for motorcycle enthuesiests (sp?). the case will go on but will not be the same.

Too bad. California lost a great crusader against the helmet law. Hopefully, all his work won't go unfinished.
