Wide rear, narrow front, wide front, narrow rear?

So the touring bikes come stock with a wide front tire and a narrow rear.. Why? then the Sports, Dyna's come stock with a wide rear tire and a narrow front tire, Why?

Then to top it off, many are going to even a "wider rear tire" !!

Is there more then just apperance going on here?? Why do the touring bikes and most ST's have the wide front being trailed with a narrow rear.... Traction??

Which is better for twisties? or is there really any difference??

Seems to me that a wider rear tire being led by a narrow front would be unstable in the turns and more suited for the drags..

Why am I so confused here, what am I missing? there must be a reason Harley does it??

I can only comment on my Fatboy, but I believe that the width of the tire generally has to do with looks, rather than stability. If you look at the rest of the softail family, there many different variations of tire sizes and combos. Generally, the wider a tire is, the more stability it will provide but it is likely that they are choosing the combo for looks.
