Temporary layoffs or shutdown in production are extremely common in business--especially in production/manufacturing areas. When inventory begins to swelll, you don't keep building, you shut down to let sales catch up to inventory levels.

What I thought was really interesting was how the story was presented. HD is shutting down a plant because they're not "shipping" enough bikes. Not because they weren't selling enough bikes, but because they weren't "shipping" enough. Of course, I had to ask myself, "how the fook do you ship more bikes if you ain't buildin' 'em?"
Anyone else catch that?

Well, you don't ship the bikes if the dealers didn't order them

I worked at a factory awhile ago in which they would shut down the factory anytime they got ahead of production. They would keep the employees on hand and have them do things like inventory, clean up, machine repair. What ever to keep the assembly line working A+.
