I posted this in the Sportster forum, but no answers as of yet. Maybe you guys can help me out. I have a K&N with the factory air cleaner, but i'm thinking about changing this spring to a Forcewinder XR Air Intake system, or a Kuryakyn Hypercharger Air Cleaner. But I was wondering what would happenend if I would get caught in the rain. I use to race atv's and I used a set up like the Forcewinder, it comes with a outerware, it's water proof.......so I really aint worried about it as bad.
I got the kuryakyn hypercharger air cleaner, and i have been caught in 2 thunder storms last year. did not notice any difference in the rain but remember both storms lasted about 15-20 mins each.
I've been riding for a year with an open air cleaner, it's an SE model with just an insert on the outside. I've been caught in my share of downpours coming home from work, never had a problem so far. I don't know that I'd ride for hours and hours in the pouring rain to find out if there is a problem, but a few miles in a cloudburst here in NY has never been a problem.
Had a couple wet rides, altho I try to avoid them.
Did get caught 45 minutes away from anything but Trees a couple months ago in a moderate rain, and suffered no ill effects that Im aware of. ( I actualy expected it to start missing or something to indicate water in the carb... but not a thing ! )
In the old days you had to pay extra for water injection! I used to fly a Cessna 180 with the air filter pointed foward into the airstream with no cover over it. I flew in some heavy rains and always with no effect. Ice fog was another story. Ice fog will clog an airfilter in a short time. Bad news! ........... BC
