I've read with interest in several other posts that folks are not getting "the wave" from other riders for various reasons. The type bike, type helmet, etc. Am I the only one that thinks it is foolish to sterotype someone due to the kind of bike they ride or helmet they wear. Personally, I try to be friendly to anyone I meet on two wheels. Everyone can't afford a Harley or for personal reasons choose a different brand. I am a long time Harley rider. I ride 12-15K miles per year. If I see a rider go down, I am going to see if I can help. I don't give a damn what kind of bike he or she is on. I will show a friendly hand to anyone on two wheels. You never know, they may be the one to come to your aid.
I will also wave at anyone, they are some gay waves though, have you guys seen these?....lol
I have had people on Harley's not wave at me, and I think WTF!
Yep. I'm of the "if they're riding, I'm waving" persuasion as well. However, it's been pointed out that there are a number of reasons people may not be waving. The big one, and the one I assume for most folks, they didn't see you. So many things we need to be paying attention to while riding, they may have just been looking someplace else at the critical time.
That being said, I have seen people pull a deliberate snub. Folks who look right at you, clearly, and then look away without waving. For those folks, and I use folks in lieu of other terminology here, I just have to laugh! You think being rude makes you a bada$$?!? How idiotic.
So, I wave to everybody, and the ones that snub me just put a smile on my face!
I always wave or give a head nod, unless it's unsafe. 25-35 years ago when I was riding, youwaved at everyone.
I have found that many people in my town of about 100,000 do not return waves and most of those that don't are Harley riders.
Two reasons I can think of...
For a community of our size, we seem to have a lot of bikes. It was 42 degrees out today and I prob. saw 6-8 bikes just driving to a local restaurant and looking out the window while we were there. (During the winter, more people do return waves.
I live in IL where helmets are not required. I appreciate that, but always wear one. Seems to me like some riders, particuarly Harley riders, will not return a wave if you are wearing a helmet.
Personally, I'm just goint to go on acknowleging other riders in whatever way I can that is safe. Art
Here in the UK a head nod seems to be the norm, sideways or forward makes no odds. I will nod whatever the bike and I don't let it get to me if they don't acknowledge, they may have somthing else on there mind. The helmet thing isn't an issue, we have to wear them all the time.
I've had car drivers and passengers wave at me. I will wave back if its safe to do so or give a nod.

On my little 2 hour trip yesterday I must have passed 100 riders. (very popular bike route). I'd say I got about an 80% wave rate. The other 20% (if in fact they saw me) can lick my toes.
