As Keystone said, you may want a newer Evo or TC bike instead. Having a shovel for a first experience with HD may leave a sour taste in your mouth. They can require a fair about of maintenance to keep them on the road, and the shovel is not the most reliable of motors. They look and sound great, and can be made reliable, but for the most part you will probably be doing a fair amount of wrenching to keep it going down the road. But that is just my opinion.

You might be disappointed with the shovel. There have been many improvements over the years and that was part of the AMF years. Currently dealers are trying to sell HD's at deep discounts as a result of a sales crash and a gult of new HD's! You may want to steer yourself in that direction. There are some great buys out there!

I think $7500 in kinda wishful thinking, I agree with Keystone, around 5 or 6 should get it. I am sure the guy will tell you, new this and that, I've spent $1000's, etc., sorry man, it really doesn't matter, this is what it will bring. Price is more often determined by what the buyer will pay. It is a good lookin' scoot though. JMHO, YMMV, etc.

I looked at the pictures as close as I could. To be honest, I would

pass on that bike. It does not look as though it was well cared for.

I assume you are not real familiar with HD & shovels. Take a close look

at Da Gumps ride. You can tell he loves or at least likes that bike.

I bet you would never see electrical tape, wrapped around any wires

on his bike. I would look a little longer. If you want a shovel. Buy one that

has been well cared for, in good shape, and pay a little more.

It will be cheaper in the long run. Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a shovel if you want a real motorcycle. Yeah there is a little wrenching here and there and your butt sometimes falls asleep on a long putt, but nothing in this world comes free and it's a great experience. Now I ride an 04 ultra and I don't have to wrench on it much but It's alot like riding a singer sewing machine.

He's my wife's old 78 shovel. 1000 miles on total rebuild ( 96"), apes, suicide shift, passing lamps, painted 2 years ago. She's asking $7500 also but it doesn't look like it was painted with a spray can.
Forgot to put in that I put a second slot in the clutch release lever so she could also have a hand clutch just in case she had to do a panic stop.

Wondered when someone would throw AMF into the thread...:&gt
I didn't, cuz it is really a mute point anymore. Anything that was built during those years has been rebuilt at least once. So the "attitude" @ the MoCo that caused the problems has been removed from said bikes. NOW, if you have a completely "original" AMF bike with ALL the correct paint, badges, etc, there are ppl collecting them and they do bring decent coin. But will agree with a lot of the posts, if this is a "first" HD as you stated, in all seriousness, I, too, even tho I am a pan &shovel boneheadwould suggest finding a decent EVO or moving up to a TC. But if you are a wrench and a wrenching fool, like some ppl here (HEHEHE) then by all means grab a handful of shovelhead, get a factory service manual, and have some fun. Given the availability of "new" products, metals, machining techniques, shovels CAN be made to run alongside an EVO all day long. There are 4 in my little town alone. But they do still vibrate, rattle and roll down the road. And they WILL draw a crowd at the waterin' hole, 'specially if you have a "kicker". And unless you have $$$$$$ to purchase special tools galore, working on TC's is outta reach for most of us wrenchers.

Shovels are great motors especially if they're 80ci. I got a 1983 FL and other then a top end its been good to go all this time.

That particular bike that you show ofpictures is nice looking. If the compression is good and its is mechanically sound and depending on the price? How much does he/she want? 7500$...I'd offer 7000. While the handle bars are not my style thats easily rectifiable. Nice clean looking bike.

well, here is the deal, I am closing down my trucking business and selling the last one of 3 trucks I had, it is an 1994 Peterbilt cabover and bootom dollar I would take was $8,000.00, however, gentleman is offering me $4,500.00 cash + 1979 shovelhead, as long as I am (value wise) at at least $8,000.00 I`m ok, so this bike should be worth at least $3,500.00 for me to do the deal.If you guys think that it is, great, but if you think that bike is not worth $3,500.00 than I can`t make the deal.I`m not worried about selling it right now, it`s spring and I don`t mind riding around on nice Harley.Only two things I`m worried about are that this bike may not be worth $around 4K and that I`m 6'5" and 300lbs , and I don`t know how big that bike really is.Is it a bigger bike or a small one?? now, that`s the thing.

Db

btw...

thanks to everyone for all the advices you gave me, I got some by email also, and so far it seems that this bike should be worth around 5K maybe 6K..
