EVO or TC88 ??? Which is better?
I have a 2001 Road King FLHRI and have found a 99 Softail with the springer front at asteal with only 6k miles. So I am torn between fuel injected TC88 or the old evolution carb. Help!!

For all practical purposes, the carb is just fine..especially on a Sofetail..

The twin cam is a smoother riding bike. The evo will have some vibration to it. You'll feel it in the floorboards and the handlebars. Typically it smooths out nicely above 70MPH. I know plenty of people with an Evo springer and would never get rid of it.

RE: EVO or TC88 ??? Which is better?
Two things over the past 15 years or so simply get me chuckling.
First- TC's are "smoother", less vibration. If I were concerned about vibration whatsoever, the last thing I would buy, would be a V twin design, where both rods/pistons are bolted to the same crank journal. HD has literally spent millions and millionsof $$ tocompensate for that, because it is inherant to the design. They vibrate, they always have, and thay always will as long as it is based onthat design. Second- EFI; I, for one, scoffed at it when it first came out. "They are ruining a perfectly good motorcycle". Well, DUH, Gumby, look out in the driveway. Every vehicle sitting in the drive, is, fuel injected. Sure, it took a couple of stabs to get it fingered out, but the reliability and tuneability are there. It works, and it works good. Personnaly, I like carbs (old iron), run "B"'s ($$$) but like the tuneability of the "E"s (E is the "new" B, G is the "new" D) I cannot foresee having the $$$ to get back into a TC Ultra anytime soon, so willbe watching for an EVO bagger, and if it is HIGH mileage, what better time to "cube" it than then. And I would not be adversed to finding another shovelhead, put in a 93" S&S kit, 5spd in a 4 case, deck it with leather bags and trunk, and build my own "RoadWarrior" The metals and technologyare there to build a very nice running "Old Iron" road bike. But I can get more "cubes" out of an EVO. I'd buy an EVO springer, cuz I really like the looks of a springer, and they run and sound decent, too. But want to build something that doesn't kill Momma's back anymore. She's been a trooper on the pan, since we sold the Ultra. Don't know of very many guys, if any,who could do what she has done the last 4 years. GUMBY |

If you love doing the wrench thing you can't beat the Evo, it's simple to maintain, parts aren't a problem, and if power is desired they can punch out to 124+ and still be reliable. I like tuning my S&S E and my "little" 80" with a mild cam and light weight frame gives me all the performance this old man needs. As a reformed Cafe' racer I've had my fill of knee draggin' and drag racing. I built this bike to take me til I'm too senile or decrepid to ride anymore. Due to a accident I have the opportunity to do some improving on things that bugged be about the bike, but the engine is not one of them.
In case you haven't gotten my point, I LOVE MY EVO.;) |

If you don't buy the Springer, let me know about it. I will buy it.

Something to consider is how long HD will support your model? Planned obsolesence creeps into the picture as the bikes add more electronics to the package and our bikes become older. The cruise module for my '94 is no longer available along with some other parts. One of my buddies had a hard time finding parts for his '96 fuelie.
What do we do when the parts well runs dry ? It's frustrating in some ways that you can buy nearly any part needed for a '94 Ford or Chev but not for a Harley. |
