The bf and I were out riding yesterday when a situation arose with his helmet. After riding all day and making our way back home the plastic piece of the chin strap failed and off came his helmet at about 70 mph. Unfortunately the car behind him ran it over. It was one of those beanie helmets so it did not survive. We u-turned to retreive it to see if it was at least wearable so he wouldn't get stopped riding without a helmet. We live in a helmet optional state but were actually over state lines when this happened and about 50 miles from the border. Well the helmet was a total loss, its already 7pm on a holidayso going somewhere and buying one was not an option. So he took his black bandana and tied it to his head so it at least looked like he was wearing one. Luckily we made it home and only passed one cop and he didn't stop us. I'm just curious what someone else would have done in a similar situation. [/align]
see what happens when you buy a cheap helmet?? Here's another question,,lets say you go out to your bike and your helmet has been stolen......no what do you do?..open up your saddle bag and break out the "spare"?
I actually have wondered that same thing... If my helmet gets stolen, what then? Probably ride on, especially if I'm in the middle of nowhere with no option to buy a spare.

Yep, I'd unlock my tourpak and pull out my spare. Actually, I lock up my helmet when away.
I do most of my riding alone, and wear anovelty, but keep a Biker's Choice DOT approved Skid Lid handy in-case a LEO makes an issue and won't let me back on without a DOT.
I live in an helmet optional state. Even if I didn't live in a helmet optional state. I would have rode the bike home without a helmet. Taken a ticket if I had to. I would have picked up the pieces and rode home. To me that is the only option. Had someone ask me what I would do if I lost my headlight at night. My answerwas follow someone with lights--ride slower if no one is around and I am driving in the dark. I am not leaving either bike on the side of the road over minor problems. Major problems we still don't leave the bike--ride it---trailer it--or push it. If a LEO gets involved we play it by ear. Explain our problem and maybe get a helpful hand. Not all LEO's are DH's. If he's a DH than we deal with it somehow. Only a DA argues with a DH. The walmart suggestion was a good one--they sell cheap helmets.
