What do you think is the best engine Harley ever built?
With all of the threads about new bikes, older bikes, 6 vs 5 speed, 96 inch, 88 inch, 80 inch etc., what do you think is the best combo Harley ever built?
My vote is
1. Late model Evo. Needs upgraded cam bearings and cam. Late model carbs were fine.
2. Early model TC88 while still using roller bearing cranks. Needs Gear drive cams and upgraded cam bearings.
My first choice is the EVO with Torrington cam bearings and the EV27 cam. Upgrade intake and exhaust and jet the stock carb.
My second choice, early TC88 would have S and S 510 gear drive cams, upgrade intake and exhaust and jet the carb. No fuel injection allowed.
I believe that after those models, EPA got too big of a grip and things started getting worse. The latest Harley I would/do own is a 2005 and I think I have that sold.

All of 'em are the best...........It's too difficult to pick one in particular because I like too many of 'em!

Really liked my 99 Heritage Evo. But it doesnt hold a candle to my 07 Heritage 96inch twin cam. Improvements in technology has had its low points but Harley seems to come out of them with something better than before. If I was building an old chopper a panhead would be hard to pass up.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "best".
 \\;
If we're talking the best looking, the knucklehead is hands down the best looking to me. I can't really put my finger on it but it just appeals to me more than any other platform.
 \\;
If we're talking technology, I'd say it has to be the revolution (Vrod) engine. I guess this one would also be the performance winner if you want to talk drag racing etc., but I like to classify this engine/bike with the buell bikes as I don't consider them cruisers, though that is obviously arguable.
 \\;
For performance, I think the twin-cam will prove to be the best platform. Though it hasn't proven itself in this arena yet, there are so many improvements over the Evo I can't see how one would think the the twin-cam won't eventually surpass the hot rod Evo's out there. (Read Donny Pertersons new book if you want a detailed explanation of the improvements).
 \\;
Economically, the Evo takes \\;this title and will probably hold it for a long time. First of all this engine saved HD. Second, there are so many aftermarket parts for it that one can build a pretty hot motor for a reasonable price. And finally, this engine is the all time swap meet champion as you can find most anything you need for it at swap meets or on e-bay.

1)late model EVO has a pretty reliable track record, not crazy about the EFI
2)Late model shovel, everything. 4 speed tranny(tight) Carb not EFI a plus with me.

Had a 63 Pan for almost 25 years and recently parted with it. \\; Tired of that quirky antiquated technology. Let it be someone elses "joy".

It's hard to not like what you have had and appreciated: Evo, Shovel, Pan, Ironhead. But really with all the technical improvements, I have to vote for my TC96. Damn, this thing is sweet.
