Hello....
Army guys mostly seem to prefer to forget they were ever in the Army - until they get old and have nothing better to do than sit at the VFW drinking $1 beers.
Navy guys... will usually admit they were a squid, speak positively, and briefly, about their experiences... but don't usually feel defined by it.
Air Force guys... well, they weren't ever really anything to begin with, right?

In my personal experience... I am probably most likely to talk military when I am around a Marine. Squids usually don't wear patches or display their service, so, I rarely know anyone is ex-Navy unless it comes up in conversation. I feel some connection with Marines because of my time on amphibs, all the exercises at Lejune, spending almost all of 1983 in Beirut ... many of my friends from back then were Marines. My bro-in-law was one of them. He's got Marine stuff all over his house. You'd be hard pressed to find a Navy thing in my house though (but there are some).
For a while in my sport bike days, I rode with a cop who had a Goldwing, an FJ1100 and he was a motorcycle cop. Blasting the back roads at triple digit speed with him, I knew we'd never get a ticket.

If you are friends with a cop, at least with him, you are more like one of his brothers and less "the general public". Of course, that assumes your transgressions are relatively rare. If crime is a lifestyle for you, then... you probably wouldn't find a cop you'd want to be friends with (or one who'd want to be friends with you).
