Default Engine and Frame Number Location

I purchased an 2005 Softail Standard in July. The State just got back to me saying some numbers didn't match up. Can anyone on here tell me where on my bike I could find the Engine number and the Frame number? I assumed the number stamped into the top of the transmission was the engine number, but according to the The State Of Minnesota, I'm wrong. Any help finding these numbers would be appreciated. T.J.

I wouldn't advertise the fact your frame and engine numbers don't match. The coppers will come and slap the cuffs on you for possessing stolen goods. Didn't you read the thread here a few days back about mis-matched numbers?

I know the bike isn't stolen, Its just a glitch in the States system. I was just looking for a little advice.

Thanks BagerDriver,
The number from the top of the transmission was listed on the paperwork instead of the engine number. I found the right number under the cylinders on the left side. Should take care of the issue. Thanks! T.J.
