I have a question...I lost my father last July, to an unexpected heart attack. He was an avid rider. I have been trying to decide on an ink design in his memory. Would it be inappropriate to have the broken wings in memory of him? I understand it is to symbolize a fallen rider and considering my father will never ride again, I thought it may fit!
Ok here is the deal, the broken wing patch is not to say that my
bones were broken or my bike is bashed up. The broken wing patch
say to the world after a bad wreck that you have what it takes to
get right back on a bike and keep on living. I have earned the patch
and I wear it with pride. As soon as I got out of the hospital I had to
go to the harley davidson web site and pick out another bike. My fxdwg
did not make it, as soon as I had made my choice my wife drove me to
the dealership where I signed the papers for a Road King Classic my best
friend took his trailer up there and we brought it home and stored it in his
his shop building till I got my arm out of the cast.
My arm and two ribs were broke and my face was shattered. I'm still ugly
but I ride to tell the story, "GOD is good"

That's the way I understand it as well. When I wrecked the Panhead one of my buds bought the patch for me. And even though I don't wear any I still have it in my box of memories. Who knows someday I may tack that one on my jacket!
I know someone who bought one because his bike got knocked over in a Walmart parking lot.
He should have been berated.
I can see having/wearing one if you've been taken out on your bike, but if you dumped it yourself, you didn't "earn" squat. It would only show what a dumb *** you would be.
There is always someone, like the Walmart whack job that takes things to an extreme, taking a good "honorable" thing and tarnishing it. There are those in every aspect of life.
