Rear Pulley

Can you run the rear pulley backwards? I know the belt tracks towards the inside going one way, and the outside going the other, but what difference does it make which way you mount the pulley? Is it just for aligmnment, or is the pulley designed to only rotate in one direction?

Depends on if you are north or south of the equator as to which side goes out
