What's the big difference between a Dyna and a Softtail?
Not knowing all the history and such, I don't see too much difference between these two lines. Don't they have the same size engine also? Is it mainly just a difference in body styles?

The frames are different. Softail has a hidden rear suspension to create the look of an ol' hardtail. The dyna has exposed rear suspension like your Sporty. Though they have the same size engine, the Softail is rigid mounted (newer ones with a counterbalanced motor to reduce vibes) and the dyna has a rubber mounted motor. Those are the major diff's between the two.

Body style plus shocks are hidden underneath on Softail, hardtail look.

Ah, thanks, that clears it up. I see what you mean now.
no prob |
Some people believe that the Dyna handles better in the twisties. I'm in that camp, and I own both. In particular, the Dyna Wide Glide handles a lot better for me than the softail Deuce, even though they have other similarities. On the Wide Glide, I could run away and hide from the Deuce on the two lane mountain roads.
Overall, I prefer the look of the softails. That's just me... $.02 |
bit o more power in the same size engine on a dyna vs softail because of the counter balance on the softail

"Body styles"?

Softails are for showin' and dynas are for goin'
Nothing against Softails here; I think they are definately the better looking of the two. I just prefer the "go factor". IMHO, a softail is like a hot wife that doesn't feel like cooking dinner. The dyna is the fat wife with a roast in the oven and head for dessert:D |
Real bikes have rear shocks!!!...:>)
