Default Fuel Filter on a Fuel Injected Bike

I had this posted in another section and wasn't getting much help so I thought I would give this a try.

I have been trying to get through all of my bike maintenace prior to the start of the heavy riding season. I have the HD service manual for my bike which is an 07 fuel injected softail Deluxe. In the manual I noticed that the fuel filter is supposed to be changed at 25,000 miles. I am over that. I talked with a dealer mechanic and he told me if I haven't changed one before that I should bring the bike in and have them do it due to the complexity.

The manual didn't make it sound to complex??? Is the mechanic yanking my chain.

Has any one here changed one? Are there any tricks or things to look out for?

Thanks in advance. I did a search but as usual couldn't find what I was looking for.

Phil

How much does he want to change it? If it's more than an hour's labor I'm doing it myself. What one man can do another can do.

I am not sure what they would charge. I think the filter is about $45. Not sure what the dealer would charge to change it out. I didn't ask him that.

I like doing all of my own bike work...that is the only way I know it's done right.

Thanks for the reply.

Been wrenching cars all my life and this bike stuff is pretty new to me. I enjoy doing my own work when I can. Don't mind dropping the bucks for the tools. Love tools.

I have 15k to go before my fuel filter change. By that time I have a feeling it'll be a piece of cake

Yeah, that's kind of what I think. Doesn't seem to difficult. It is down in the tank and I think the line is under pressure. I think I may give it a try this weekend since the forecast says rain.

Hope I can get a response from someone here that has done it to maybe give me a "heads up" if needed.

Thanks,

Phil

I've had my tank off a couple times and the fuel pressure isn't anything to worry about unless your face is in front of the hose. About as much pressure as you get when you push the button on an aerosol can. Same thing with the fuel system on cars.

Just take your time and follow the directions step by step. Maybe take some digital shots so you can remember how it goes back together. Don't know how many times I'd wish I had done that

It can be a bitch to pull the assembly from a softtail tank if you've never done it before. A buddy and I fought with his for a long time before carrying the tank in tto the dealership and asking a tech do it (it took him 5 seconds). Go figure.

Darn it Stro, why you gotta go and tell Pip that. You're gonna scare him off and he won't ever be able to help me when it comes time for me to do mine.

Sorry Jimmers! It's one of those things that, once you've done it, is a breeze, but if you haven't done it...confuses the **** out of ya! FWIW, the tech didn't charge my buddy anything, he just smiled that smile you get when you know you just made someone look stupid.
