sneaking HD engineering
This is so funny but so true. I know exactly how this goes with sporty's, probably the same on most bikes. It makes your wonder if HD engineers specifically design bikes for the reasons below....more money.
Warning!
This is a new Harley Davidson Sportster Motorcycle, sure to bring you years of riding enjoyment. Owning this motorcycle may cause irreversible desire to continuously upgrade motorcycle. Any person considering purchasing this motorcycle should consider the following:
Upgrading your motorcycle is very easy, for example, you can purchase new exhaust, just make sure you remove the O2 sensors, change exhaust gaskets, and then make sure you change to a high flow air filter, followed by a stage 1 download or purchase of a SERT or PCV. Then you should take your bike to the dealer to have it dyno tuned. After you are satisfied, you may find that you need more storage space on your new bike. Be sure to pick up a nice set of saddlebags. After your get the bags home you will find that they will not fit on the bike. You must purchase Harley Davidson saddle bag supports. After returning home from the dealer you find that you cannot install the saddle bag supports because the rear lights are in the way. You must purchase the Harley Davidson lay back license plate kit with light bar. Finally, you return home again and install the lay back license plate and light bar followed by saddle bag supports.
You may now find yourself wanting a more comfortable seat, and the old lady has been nagging at you to go for a ride. So you head to the dealer and pick up a new sundowner two up seat. You return home and install the seat and then realize that there is no place for the old lady to put her feet. You must now install HD foot peg brackets, clevis, and pegs. Ah, finally ready for two up until you are made aware there is no back rest for your passenger. Back at the dealer to purchase the quick detach sissy bar and back rest. You return home to install your new HD backrest with quick detach sissy bar only to discover that your saddle bag supports are in the way and you must purchase another special bolt kit to allow the two to work together. Another trip to dealer to purchase HD sissy bar detach hardware for use with saddle bag supports.
Finally a nice two up ride down the highway with the old lady, however, these longer trips really beat you up. Time to look into getting a windshield. You decide on your purchase of the compact windshield. Its nicely packaged and includes the quick detach hardware. The windshield installs easily but now your front signal lights are blocked. Flipping through the catalog your find a HD front signal light relocation kit. You bring the kit home and begin the installation to move your signals down lower on the triple tree. During the removal of the lights, the stock wiring is routed through the bar risers. In order to move your signals you must lift the tank, remove plastic cover, unplug signal lights, cut half of harness, re-route wires, re-solder, heat shrink, and re-assemble hardware. Finally, you can see your lights again.
Your back on the road again enjoying a nice ride on a perfect day. As you pull up to the light, you notice a nice engine trim kit on the bike next to you. You think to yourself, how hard could that be? And the saga continues.....
Three Important Rules of upgrading your harley
1. All harley upgrade instructions suck, be prepared to insert your own interpretations.
2. One upgrade is like plumbing work in the house, it usually requires several trips and the replacement of more than one part.
3. Nothing costs less than $100, if you found it for less than $100 the dealer screwed up the price gun.

Ah jee maybe you bought the wrong model. Several come with what you added. But I think you really liked moding it yourself and as you hinted it is only the start.
Rock on.
Rock on.

Marketing Genius in my opinion. There are not many places to buy factory parts except the stealer. They have income for life and if you need to have anything fixed you are in a whole other world of hurt.

Great Post! The simplest things seem to require several trips and lots of money. I've started down the path of new slip-ons that may or may not require a re-map. If the re-map is needed (which I'll find out shortly) I can see the future already: True Duals and a full stage one upgrade.
