Wrong Vin number
I purchased a 2008 road king with a VIN number of a 1999 Harley. Can anybody tell me what the xx on the VIN number means? I checked online, and my buddy said the bikes a 1999.

there is different VIN series. I believe that the `1999 number is an old style number. Am not sure what year it changed. You have to find the series number for the bikes made in the 2000's

It all depends on where the XX are in the VIN,,,,,this should help you figure the VIN out.

maybe this will help
you should have an "8" for the year code. http://www.techsweb.us/hdvin2001.html |
your owners manual breaks down your vin code for you. i'd go by what the book said over what your buddy said.

Check the DMV recods
I say you check the department of motor vehicles records on the vin#. They should have records of inspections registrations etc. Seems you are missing something or got ripped off. Does the bike have 2008 Motor & tranny? Huge difference from 1999-2008. 2008 with 1999 vin who cares as long as it runs & looks great.:icon_deadhorse:

You'd care if you're sitting at the side of the road with about 3 police officers going over your bike and the thought of jail going thru your mind. If they don't match up, you best have paperwork showing why. And DMV won't be able to do anything other than tell you if it's registered in that particular State, or listed in NCIC as stolen. |
The 10th digit of the vin is the year. If it's an 8, you have a 2008. If it's a letter, I believe X or W, it's a 1999. They used letters from 1981 to 1999. For 2010 they're back to letters A being 2010.

My old book says X = 1999

Did you buy the bike new or used? Where are you taking the VIN from (plate on frame, engine, etc)? Was the price "too good to be true"? LoL |
