They certainly used to. Back in 1980, the only way to secure a Harley was to lug along a padlock with you. That was for the forks. If you wanted a more serious kind of security system, you used a loggers chain and padlock.

Part of it may have been my age (I was only 22 at the time), but when I finally found someone that would insure it, my Low Rider cost $1,200.00 a year. That was about 1/5th the price of the bike back then.

When I bought my bike I wasn't even considering Harley (long story) but was about to buy a Vstar 1300. three days before going to sign the papers I saw the price of the 1200 custom sporty and it was only a little higher after adding sissy bar, windshield, and sundowner. I called the insuurance company (Progressive) and the sporty was 100 bucks cheaper.

Depends on your beacon (FICO) score, area in which you live, vehical, Whether or not you get any discounts...homeowner, multi vehical, etc.

As for the person who said theirs went up 50% for no reason....There IS a reson, you just don't know what it is. If it had happeneed to me, I woulda asked the ins. co. why it went up.

I'm a bit conused since I was always under the impression that insurance rates were mainly tied to the size of the engine. Is it because the Fatboy costs more or is more likely to get stolen?
In North Carolina the price break is 1000cc. However... insurance rates in NC are tied to things such as miles ridden by the insured, claims by the insured, and risks assoicated with the brand/model. Sportbikes might crash more often, and HD's might get stolen more often.. (I said MIGHT....just as an example)

My 2005 FLTR, costs me $95 a year more, than my 2002 Honda 1100 Spirit did. I have my endorsement, MSF-BRC, and ERC, a "clean record" and average 20,000 miles a year on the bike, with no claims.

I paying more for my Road King Classic than I did for my Honda GL1800 GW. I would imagine because of the theft factor. In the 32 years of riding a Goldwing, I don't believe I ever heard of one being stolen.

I'm 24, have 1 ticket on my record (failure to obey traffic sign) and I paid $339/year with Progressive for full coverage on a 2008 Nightster.
(I'm in Florida)
Now when I was 18 and had the R6.. rates were rediculous!

Theres more than 1 company. check around and see..
different states rates even for the same company are different..
and yea just like autos, houses and every thing else, its tied to value....

Congrats on your bike and Welcome to the forum.

It's based on how much does cost to replace the bike if it is wrecked or stolen .A new Harley is $20,000.00 + I am not sure of Honda VTX . Also a Harley will hold it's value longer then most other bikes.

I know that old men living in the mid west with high credit scores and no tickets don't pay much for any insurance.
+1

Also, a used VTX VS a new HD is not exactly the same bike. It would also cost you less to insure a used Toyota Camry than a brand new Ford Taurus.

When I switched to the Dyna from my Star 1300, my insurance went down.

With progressive, and any insurance company really, CALL and ask what they can do about rates. I got a cheaper quote on Geico, called Progressive, and they worked it all out.

I have been with them for 5 years and have all my cars insured through them as well.
