Do Harley's cost more to insure?

Just check around, HD actually helped me find the cheapest insurance for my bike, which was Safeco, about $50 for full coverage/month. I know alot of people get full coverage for around $30, but this is my first bike, so i figure that's why it's more. BTW, the cheapest I was quoted for a sportbike was $2500/year, through Dairyland insurance, whereas I think Allstate wanted $5k+ for insurance (more than the bike!!). A harley (cruiser type) will be far cheaper than a sportsbike, for sure, but may be a little more than a cheaper metric cruiser like a V-Star or Valkyrie.
Also, some insurers are competitive and may work with you to lower rates less than a competitor, especially if you're planning on switching from them to a competitor.

I imagine the main reason for the increase is the difference between an $18K bike and an $8K bike, after rolling them out the dealer door. But, shop around. There's always a better deal, just make sure you're comparing identical coverage.

I've been riding for almost 40 years, and full coverage on my Sporty is less than $200/yr. Maybe it's a geezer discount!

I just sold a Honda VTX 1800 and ordered a new 2010 Fatboy that should be ready in about 5-7 weeks. I was surprised to find out that Progressive wants to charge me double to insure the Fatboy. No other variables have changed other than going from an 1800 Honda to a 1600 Harley. I'm a bit conused since I was always under the impression that insurance rates were mainly tied to the size of the engine. Is it because the Fatboy costs more or is more likely to get stolen?

My 2002 VTX1800 cost identical to my 2010 Ultra Classic. I have Markel Insurance.
It is almost impossible to compare between different riders. Zip code, credit rating, age, driving record, if combined with car and house insurance. And many other factors.
I know that old men living in the mid west with high credit scores and no tickets don't pay much for any insurance.

Not a clue never insured anything but a Harley. But,I cannot imagine why it would cost any more.Years ago when Harleys had the biggest motors that was the insurance co's excuse to charge Harley riders more, then they went by cc's. You ride a 1200 cc, dig deeper into the wallet.
