I was in the local bike leather shop picking up a new vest and having my club patches sewn on. While the lady in the shop was sewing we were talking about how I had recently - this week actually - been able to ride again after my accident.

In late August I wrecked my bike and suffered a complete fracture of my ankle. After the surgery I had a really nasty reaction to the morphine and other drugs they had me on that landed me in ICU for three days. What was supposed to be a routine surgery turned into a five day hospital stay. Over the past two months I've healed up pretty well, though I'm still hobbling about with a cane, and I've fixed up the bike. I took my first ride in 66 days on Monday.

So, as I was telling the lady this, she asked me if I had my broken wings yet. I had seen them on a few vests, but didn't know much about them. I had an idea, but wasn't too sure and not being much of a biker-shop-patch-fiend I didn't think anything about getting some. So, she gets up finds them on the wall w/ all the patches stapled to it and their number and then proceeds to fish them out of a filing cabinet with all their patches. She said that if I didn't mind she'd put my broken wings on the vest while she was sewing the other patches b/c I'd earned them.

Now that I've read up on them, I'm kinda proud to have them.

Are they only for people who have been injured in a crash? I've gone down once, but thankfully wasn't injured.

 

Hope I never get them.

 

Broken wing is actually either a pin or a patch with one wing on it. Alot of times it will have a wheel with a wing attached to it. Signifies if you went down, in a crash. Unfortunately I have one.

 

i am knocking on all kinds of wood right now.

I earned my set of broken wings back in the early 60's... before there were broken wing patches. Wasn't a pretty sight. I've been fortunate enough that I've only had one minor upset since. (Knocking quite hard on anything close to resembling wood!)

 

Earned mine back in '81, 3 days in the hospital, 3 fractured vertebrae, 2-3 broken ribs, and a broken sternum. I still have the bike it happened on ('79 Bonneville Special).
