I did something I said I wouldn't, I rode without a helmet.....

.... and I LOVED IT!!!!!! I was Gettysburg Pa. this past weekend for their bike week event and I rode for a short distant (about 10 miles) without my helmet. While legal to do so in Pennsylvania, I told myself I would never ride without a helmet, that I had family obligations (wife and kids) and it just makes sense to wear one. But after my riding buddies talked me into "short ride", I put my helmet back in the saddlebag. The feeling of the wind moving around my head was exhilarating, I was hooked. I now understand why there are so many anti-helmet groups and riders around. While I live in Virginia and presently do not have an option about whether to wear one or not. I will now support that it should be the riders choice to wear a helmet or to ride without one.

So, in other words, you didn't think it should be and individuals choice before you rode without a helmet?

cutacroshorty,

To be honest, I thought riders who did not wear a helmet were just crazy. I did feel that it should be an individuals choice, but I just did not support that opinion with words or acts. I will now actively support a riders choice to wear a helmet or ride without.

Yep... Riding with a helmet is like sex with a condom. It's great, but even better without it!
I ride with my helmet 95% of the time, and I am only getting better at keeping it on. Try not to get hooked on
that feeling, cause it's hard to go back once you ride naked.

Everything has a price. Think of the consequences if your melon hits the pavement. Is it worth the feeling of the wind blowing through your hair?
The condom analogy is a pretty good one...........and unprotected sex can have a price too!

Your choice.....your head......your Life.

That was funny $hit. It's an individuals choice for sure and that's why I don't ride without one, b/c I know I would love it and would never wear one again!!:D

Finalcut,

Since Virginia has a helmet law, I guess I would have to make the decision.........

I've been doing the same from time to time here in PA. They dropped the mandatory helmet law 2 or 3 years ago but I was already so used to riding with one it took me until this year to try without. I really haven't given it a great deal of thought and will continue to ride however I feel comfortable...helmet or not. Of course I can see how handy it can be to wear one if I ever kissed the pavement :)

Going without is truly a nice option. We all balance safety vs. comfort when we make that decision.

I rode 440 miles of interstate highway on Saturday. By the end of the day, my neck and upper shoulders were exhausted from the wind pulling back on my helmet. I wish I could have taken it off, but NY is a mandatory helmet state.[:@]

I truly believe we should "let those who ride, decide".

We as ADULT U.S. citizens should have the choice!! Missouri requires the helmet, so I ride with a helmet 100% of the time. I have ridden in other states that give you the choice and I have only rode helmetless twice, it was awesome. But riding with a helmet is awesome, too. So really Riding is all it's about.
