Overheating on 96" engines?
#32
Have kept my 08 basically stock so far and have rode all over the country in very hot weather without any overheating problems. Buy the bike and ride it. I do use Mobile V-Twin syn oil but more for peace of mind.

Had my bike comin up 5 years rode everywhere in all conditions and traffic kept the engine running through out stop start , stop start , stop start , never ever had a problem maybe the bikes they ship to England are issue free who knows all i do know is i have not had to spend one cent on all these heat fixes mentioned!.....

All of this heat stuff is a crock. I have been riding something with 2 wheels since 1969. On a motorcycle you are basically sitting on the engine. Open the hood of your car, sit on the engine and see whether or not it gets hot also. I would stay away from the 2007 models due to first year introduction, but other than that my 2009 is completely stock except for moble I oil and it runs well. Like any motorcycle it will feel hot sitting in traffic at 100 degrees. However, if you really want something hot, find an old ironhead sporty and sit in the same traffic. That is when you will find out about heat. I had one for 13 years and in the middle of summer you could not let it idle in traffic because it would get vapor lock from boiling the fuel in the carburator. What we have now a days is basically luxury motorcycles compared to the old days.

Mine is an 07 although bought in sept 06 and i have not had one issue re engine over heating so apart from the front wheel being offset a Harley unique one off which adds value to the 07s i must be the lucky one! ...

Overheat? No.
They do run hotter than past year models though. My bike I'm just now making some mods to, but I didnt do anything to it til nearly 50,000 miles of trouble-free riding.

I'll leave the answer to your question to the others but one thing I wanted to add is don't count on the military sales program being your best deal. There are too many starving dealerships around that are discounting the bikes even lower than that.

they are v-twin air-cooled engines and are going to be hot...no way around it...comes with the territory. Somethings like the ied's may reduce it some, but it'll still be hot. Only time I notice it is at a stop idling. As for "overheating", I haven't seen it in over 20K miles.

Hey Rob I bought mine in June and been breaking in the engine in this God forsaken heat where I live and I've got 900 miles on it now and ridden it in every temp imaginable and although it runs hot not once did I notice a hickup or a stutter. Like the gent said towards the beginning of this thread, I suffered with this heat more than the bike apparently. An added bonus, I couldn't find neutral for **** when I bought the bike and been finding it every time after it got 800 miles on it. My opinion, it has more to do with break in than the combination of oils I use. How do I know your wondering? I've been running on Amsoil 20w50 in engine and Primary with the 75w140 gear oil in the tranny for 400 miles and it didn't start getting easier to find that infernal neutral until 100 miles ago. Buy the 96 it's flippin awesome and you can run the beggeezus out of it and it'll give it back to you. You drawing any conclusions yet or do you need to keep searching?
On a patriotic note, every one of you guys (and gals) coming back from there should get one for free after putting it all on the line for this country....Harraaahhhh
