I've relied on the stock FOB/locking mechanisms and parking right outside my door for most of our trips. Good insurance is a definite plus. I'm interested in what brands are the best for the paging systems...and prices????

Late,

I use a generic m/c cover and rotor locks. Park right in front of your 1st floor room window. If motel doesn't have first floor room, I look for a motel thaht has one available. I've never been able to sleep through the night in a strange bed so I look out window, when I awake. Amateur bike thieves need to push the bike to a remote place to load it in a vehicle. Pros drive a van up to the bike and have enough guys to pick it up. What are you going to do with a pager with the siren turned off? Yell at them? If you shoot them, you are going to jail. It's a property crime until YOU make it something a lot more serious.

Try to stay a a decent hotel with some lighting and lots of cars. Avoid those that look empty and don't have a lot of traffic. I sometimes ask if I can park the bike on the sidewalk next to the door. I also carry a plastic-wrapped cable/lock with me. If I'm with other bikers we can cable the bikes together or possibly to that lamp post (actually I've never done either, but have the cable just in case).

I am going to put a siren on my ride... there is a tread with instruction on adding a $6 part from Radio Shack... plan that when it warms up above zero.

I have a rather large locking steel braided cable with vinyl over it. It would take a torch to cut it. Plus the bike has a locking fork. So if you have it chained to something big it is going to make it pretty hard. Also depends on how cool you bike is. If you have a 5K paint job and custom everything. Then your stupid to not spend a little more on security. My bike has the factory alarm but no siren. I need to add siren, maybe buy a air horn that I need for the road and see if it can also be wired in with the security system.

Find a place to sleep outside (if it's dry) in a sleeping bag (or a light blanket if it's summer), next to the bike with your legal carry weapon in your hand...or...a place to pitch a tent (if it's wet/raining/snowing), gun in same place.

Good insurance is my peace of mind. I lock up and take my bag with me. If they steal the damm thing I figure I get a new bike. No sweating the small stuff and what ifs
