Cool Engine tick

I have an '03 FXSTI with about 15K miles on it. I have a ticking sound on the right side. It is intermittent and changes with RPM. The motor fairly stock with just bolt on stuff. The ticking started after the bike was shipped from Maine to Hawaii when I transferred duty stations. It is my only vehicle and dot have time (or money) to take it to the shop. Any ideas?

You are probably hearing valve train noise, which is common for Harley's with hydraulic lifters, push rods, and rocker arms. However, if it starts getting a lot louder you could have a collapsed lifter. Just keep monitoring it, but if you are really concerned take to a dealer or indy and have a mechanic come out into the parking lot to listen to it.

Check your heat shield for debris in between the shield and header pipes. I've heard if a bike is shipped in gear its possible the motion of the bike will pump some oil out of the lifters via the valve train. Then again the HD valve train is exactly super quiet.

check for a bolt or rock in tires... had a rock in the tire one time that made a ticking noise..

pour some mmo in it & see if it settles down. You might think about an oil change as preventative maintenance!
