Default 1974 Harley Sportster starter issue

I am the new owner of a 1974 sportster 1000cc. This is my first bike and so I need plenty of help.

I bought the bike knowing it had a starting issue. I bought a new starter and put it on but the issue is still there. When you go to start it the starter misses more times then not, the previous owner claims to have replaced the gear the starter engages to.

So this is my current problem, any suggestions?

Bad Bendix drive. '70s XLHs were notorious for that.

it could be the bendex gear, or the cltuch basket gear, pull the primary cover and BUMP the starter a coupel times to see which one isnt meshing
