Finally got rid of the "Football"
I held my breath and put the cutting wheel to the shield and base plate..
I wasn't to sure on how others mounted a round K&N style cleaner to the factory base housing so i just started cutting and figurin it out as i went along.. it took me a few hrs to get it all worked out, but the nice throaty sound of the big twin suckin air was worth it.. it reminds me of the days when guys would flip their air cleaner lids to hear the four barrels at WOT.. first the easy parts.. cut the base, gutted the filter for the spacers to use the mounting bracket. note; i eventually installed a nut sert style fitting to install the outer top cap/center piece. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...y/IMG_4406.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...y/IMG_4405.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...y/IMG_4376.jpg the center cut out of the donor air filter and the original center plate. i wasn't worried about the donor filter trim being scratched since it would be covered. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...y/IMG_4379.jpg the back side of the air filter with the breather tubes installed.. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...y/IMG_4384.jpg all assembled before the outer cap goes on.. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...y/IMG_4385.jpg the finished product... http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y10...y/IMG_4386.jpg so what do you all think ? what did i do wrong or right.. total cost of the change.. zilch.. the filter was free from a trade in vehicle.. :D |

Okay now that is original and cool, keeping the cover. Nice job.
I don't know why, but I really like see the model name on mine on the football. I don't mind the shape either, but I'm guessing I'm in the minority on that one. It also helped direct the oil that the superglide puked out when the cam bearing went last weekend down and mostly away from me. |
thx, i found the air filter a few months back and said, i know exactly where your next home is.. though i wasn't sure exactly how to mount it up, i contemplated it for a few weeks, then said f it, wheres the cutting wheel.. :D

Went with an open filter for awhile, went back to the football after the engine started cutting out in heavy rain.

That my friend is what it's all about , nicely done .
Since it's getting cold time for guys here's a tip , the old air cleaner and $10 Kmart clock you make a nice conversation item for the den or garage . |
So now you have a softball.......................

That's a classic hotrod solution.

Very nicely done!!! That's my favorite look - clean & simple.
