Apes Measurement

Is there a "Rule of Thumb" measurement regarding how high apes should be with respect to the rider? Should they be shoulder height, max of X inches above or below? or is it simply a case of whatever feels comfortable?

Asking cause I am looking to get apes for my FXDC, but will need to order them online as to buy locally is ruinously expensive. I'd try before I buy, but none of my riding buddies have apes on their bikes so I cant even sit on bike with apes to get an idea of what may or may not fit.

I am looking at the Hill County customs 12, 14 or 16 x 1 1/4 prewired bars.

appreciate any pointers, Merry Xmas!

How tall are you?

I have had HCC's 18" bars on both my Dynas, I am 6'5" and they are shoulder height (top of my shoulders).

In my opinion anything less than 16" ain't apes....!!

..an average 5'9"

if I end up with 14s i'll call them "Almost Apes" if asked.....

I've heard that once your hands go over shoulder level your circulation to your arms/hands would be affected. I ride with 14" and my arms are pretty much horizontal. I've ridden with 12" as well and never had any problems. If you like the look of tall apes I'd say go for anything at shoulder level.

Totally false.

Anything over 12" are considered "apes" if you want to get technical about it. At 5'9", a set of 12.5" or 13" apes should get your hands at shoulder height. 16" apes just slightly above shoulder height. There aint a whole lot of difference in 3 inches. Keep in mind that the height of your risers plays into the whole apehanger equation.

Memory is a bit rusty, looks like just above shoulder height...

Never had an issue re: circulation. If you are on the freeway at 80mph it's hard work but the rest of the time I love them.

P.s. On the set I just ordered I paid an extra $90 I think to have factory plugs put on the end. Well worth it in my opinion, makes it plug & play and you don't have to take the plugs of your OE switches.

I run the HCC 16" narrows on my bike. I am 5-9 with a stock seat. They are just above shoulder height. Check out my sig. They are the most comfortable bars I have ever ridden with!

John, No sig pic so i am assuming you meant your Avatar pic? If so, what height risers do you have under the bars?

Keeping my stock 1 inch risers, so if they are 16s on 3 inch risers, the 16s would probably work for me on 1 inch risers.

Rule of thumb:

When you decide what you want, add 2 more inches.
