Swap and use your cam gear. You won't have to deal with extra noise if you install your gear. It'll be the correct backlash.

There is a way to check the new gear size against your old gear using a couple of pins and a micrometer or vernier caliper. But since you're asking "What have you done"? Of all the cams I've put in evo's over the years I just get the ones with the gear already on and pop them right in. Never had an issue with noise. I guess the tolerance is close enough between gears. Maybe someone who HAS had a noisey cam might give you different advice but I'd say just pop the sucker in and try it first. Check your cam end play also to make sure it's close (never had to change that either). Only noise I ever heard was from a twin-cam (not Evo), when I put my gear drive cams in. They were whiny for the first week then they must have "Seated in" and that whine noise went away.

I had no trouble when putting the 27 in my FXR. Measured both gears and they were close enough. Been a couple of years, so I don't remember the exact measurements. They really should be measured before installation though to save yourself some worry and possible extra work and gaskets down the line. I figured Andrews' process of mounting the gear and indexing is far more accurate than the normal shade tree wrench is gonna be.

I've swapped the gear out and its not rocket science to align/ index, it has a keyway. You would probably be surprized at the "accuracy" of one to another out of the box. Everything has a tolerance.

There's 3 different size gears. If you measure the Andrew's gear and it matches your old gear, leave it on there.

And if you can get one at a bargain price, but without the gear?
2nd hand - what to look out for?
This guy is dropping the price every few days, and to buy new in SA is very pricey.

Can you put the old (but only done 4000km) gear on the EV-27 cam ?
I understand the fact that I should probably do push-rods, bearing etc all at the same time, but just thought I could buy this and then accumulate the other stuff as it comes up, and do it all at once.
After trawling through the forums for ages, it seems that the EV-27 is the one for me: '98 FLHTCI
Cheers,
Peggers
