What helmet should I get

No it is a function thing... I like cowboy boots but based on my job I have to wear dress shoes..... Same with helmets.. do you want protection, style, etc. All achieve a function.

How much are you looking to spend? Do you have a $10 head or a $500 head?
It's all about the details, which the OP has left out completely...

get a full face
If I was going to ride in Boston, and I had any interest in my face or brain, I would get a full face helmet. I grew up in NYC, and lived in Chicago for 4 years, and I think Boston is the most dangerous city I ever drove in. When I started riding 6 years ago I wanted a 3/4 helmet, but the Honda dealer near me talked me in to a full face helmet. He told me it offered better protection, and would protect me from wind and bugs better. He was right. I had a Vulcan 750 with a low windshield, and I got smacked with large bugs and even small birds! I knew someone who fell off her bike her first season with a 3/4 and she needed 70 stitches in her face. So a lot of it depends on your windshield, your experience level, your riding style, and where you will be riding. I would not go to a Harley dealer for a helmet, all they have are Harley helmets, which are mostly black and for show. Go to a large Metric dealer and try on a bunch of HJC, Shoie, Arai etc.. Just my .02 I have a HJC now, but I think I will spend more on my next helmet.
