Neutral question on 5 speed
I have a 97 road king with 9000 miles on it. Here lately I am haveing a hard time getting it in neutral. It just won't go. Any suggestions? Anybody else had this problem.
No, I'm not a rookie, I ride everyday and have for 20 years. I just bought this bike about 4 months ago and it just started this about 2-3 weeks ago.
Thanks

When's the last time you did a clutch adjustment? Think that would be the first place to start.

And if what Panz suggests doesn't fix the issue, I've seen the neutral indicator switch cause problems as they wear, but that's usually the exception. Also, if you haven't changed and/or checked the fluid level in a while that can contribute...

When I changed to synthetic trans oil it helped a lot on my RK. I'm switching my EG as soon as I put a thousand miles on it.

I just bought a 98 RK Classic and this is exactly the same thing I've been experiencing at stop lights, etc.
I spend the entire red light trying to get into N. Kind of embarassing!
I then tried a couple of diff. things- found one that works for me.
As you're approaching the stop sign/light put it in N while the bike is still rolling-doesn't have to be going fast, just rolling.
This works for me everytime now-try it!

OLD NEWS FLASH. When harley built the balanced twin cam motor for the softails in 2000 they tried to use the original trans that was in the evo bikes. But it was really difficult to shift. They (engineers?) discovered that the vibrations coming from the evo motor was allowing the tranny to shift a lot easier than it would with the smoother running tc.
Solution to finding neutral on an evo bike. Rev the motor a bit. You'll be surprised at how much easier it is to go to neutral.
Also the trans is designed to go to neutral only from first gear. Down shift to first and bring it up.
Hope that helps.
