Default Shift pattern 883 harley

Did harley make an 883 in 1988 with a 4 speed trans 1 down and 3 up? I road one that shifts 1 down and 3 up, is somethimg wrong it? Seams to shift out ok, it has no tack, but seem to tackup in 4th gear.

I can't say yes for sure but that sounds right. 1st, neutral, then 2,3,4. neutral being after 1st down & between 1-2 going up? Sounds familiar, all I can say. I'll ask my buddy later.

It doesn't matter if it's an 883 or 1200, all the 4 speeds shift like that, 1 down, 3 up, 1st to 4th. The 883's are geared a bit different than the 1200's though and will rev just a bit higher than a 1200 riding at the same speed. Plus, if the bike is still a chain drive it could have been re-geared to rev even higher than the stock ratio. And welcome to the forum.

All Sportsters were 4 speeds (1 down, 3 up) until 1991 when they became 5 speeds. However, early Sporty's were right side shifters. Same pattern, only right side of the bike.

My '89 was 1 down, 3 up, just like every 4 speed Sporty.
