I have an 09 Street Glide, mostly stock and was thinking about trading for something new. Bike is paid for so I could sell retail or to a dealer or trade. I like to trade because its saves the hassle of dealing with nut jobs and tire kickers but I hate to give up that extra coin. Anyway, have the values of HD's been going up lately? I see dealers advertising 09 FLHX's anywhere between $17k to nearly $20k for decent mile stock examples.
Does anyone have a good guess what my bike (09 FLHX, dark blue pearl, security, cruise, mint cond) would be worth on a trade or retail sale? I'd like to be armed before hitting the dealership. I looked on NADAguides and KBB and both show $13.5 - $14k trade. Thats awesome if its the case I just didnt think my bike held its value that well in this economy.
Those are the same values I get when looking up on KBB. I would start with those numbers on trade. Retail is another game since you have to find someone willing to pay the $$$$$$.
Trade in value is wholesale value, which is less the retail value. If your happy taking the difference between retail and wholesale go for it. But don't be surprised if you get offered less by the dealer for your trade,as their job is to get your bike as cheap as possible. And they know that people that want to trade in, pretty much will give it away instead of going thru the trouble of selling git themselves.,,
Not to split hairs, but a private party shouldn't look to get "retail" book value when selling a bike. Retail book value is formulated based on standard dealer practices being includes such as professional service, mechanical inspection, 30 day or longer warranty, detailing, and established business history.
I get a laugh out of people who price based on that figure who aren't dealers. The other factor is those retail value numbers are always a good bit higher than they sell for. This makes everybody happy because the customer believes it was a great deal at, say for example, $2,000 under book value. Remember, its National Automobile DEALERS Association when looking at NADA and similar services.
Private Party Value is between Trade-in and Retail Value. If you can find a fish to even call you on an ad for excellent retail value you got something going!
I could never get that used bike "retail value" from a dealer that basicly, pays a kid $10 an hour to check the oil, wash the bike, slop on some cheap detail polish, then try to justify a bigger retail price. I dare anyone to go into any dealer and ask pointed questions about any used bike on the floor and see if they could even tell you the last owners name, nevermind anything about what previous service if any, has been done to the bike. Remember that YOU will pay for any warranty that comes with the bike, it's not given free unless the bike is under 2 yrs old. That can be used in negotiation of the final sales price. I've seen bikes on dealers sales floors with tires that are almost bald, one bike only had tank emblems on one side of the tank. They probably told a perspective buyer they had a problem with them falling off. Nothing like paying for careful, professional service.,,
All those numbers mean exactly nothing. Dealer is going to give you as little as they can...and in this economy MOST bikes over 10k just don't sell at all, when you try to sell it yourself. The only shining star in this is, you have the most sought after model in the used market...so you will have a little edge.

I have purchased 3 bikes from Racine HD. Good price, great service, (had a couple small problems dealer took care of months after the sale) and I not only know who owned them previously but met them via the dealer at dealer parties. If your dealer sux why go to them?

The number of dealers is shrinking by me. I went to all of them halfway in my state and either they had crap on the floor, or didn't have what I wanted. Finally went the private route. The only things that sucks more then buying a bike, is buying a car.,

Try ebay and search for completed listings for that model. You will have a nice idea then.
